Why Christian Parents Should Name
Their Children After Bible Characters

Revelation 3:12, “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

As I grow older, my name means much more to me. My parents named me “David,” after king David in the Old Testament. David loved the Lord, but David was an imperfect man. David made some bad decisions in his life, that he regretted. I can relate to David, as we all can. My middle name, “John,” was given to me after John the Baptist in the New Testament, for which I am grateful to my parents. I want to be like John the Baptist—preaching truthfully, boldly and without apology.

Names are important. Our text Bible verse from Revelation 3:12 says that our heavenly Father is going to give us a “NEW NAME” in Heaven. It is interesting that the inspired Word of God teaches that Jesus' precious name will be in our foreheads. Revelation 22:3-4, “And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.” Every born-again believer has the seal of God in them!

Children tend to want to live up to the name(s) they are given. For that reason I suggest that Christian parents give their children Bible names. Certainly there is no biblical requirement to do so. I just think it is a wise thing to do. I also think wonderful names for girls are: faith, hope, charity and grace. In the Bible, especially the Old Testament, names were given because of their meaning, not because they sounded nice. Names are important!
