Evangelist Bill Wiese's Counterfeit Gospel

by David J. Stewart | December 2019

Galatians 1:8, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

Kindly, Evangelist Bill Wiese is a wolf in sheep's clothing...

“Bill Wiese is a con artist real estate agent, Christian speaker, and author of the New York Times bestseller 23 Minutes in Hell. In Bill's book, he claims to have had an out-of-body experience that led him into Hell, where he was tortured and eventually rescued by Jesus, who told Bill to tell everybody of his experience ... preferably in the form of a lucrative book deal and Christian talk circuit tour.”

Kindly, the Bible calls Bill Weise a liar. Hebrews 1:1-2, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;” The Bible plainly teaches that God ONLY speaks today through His Son, that is, the Word of God (John 1:1-3, 14; Revelation 19:13).

So we KNOW that whatever Bill Wiese saw, it is NOT a message from God. It always amazes me how millions of people won't believe the inspired Word of God, but they will listen to what a mortal man claims. John 5:43, “I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.”

Bill's Counterfeit Gospel

At the end of a sermon delivered to thousands of people, Evangelist Bill Wiese leads the audience to pray the following half-truth prayer to be saved:

“Dear God in Heaven, I know that I've sinned, and I know that cannot save myself. I believe You sent Your Son Jesus to die on a cross for me. That He was crucified, died and was buried, but He rose again, and lives forevermore. I ask you to forgive me of me sin, I'm sorry, and I repent. I turn away from my sin. I want to follow You. I ask You to come into my heart. I receive you as my Lord and Savior! You are the Son of God. Your shed your blood for me. Thank you Jesus, for dying for me. Thank you for taking me to Heaven. And I now confess, I'm a born-again Christian, and I'm going to Heaven. Amen!

Let's break down his prayer and list Bill's requirements to be saved:

  1. Admit being a sinner
  2. Believe the Gospel of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection
  3. Repeat a prayer
  4. Ask forgiveness, say “I'm sorry,” and turn away from sin
  5. Desire to follow Jesus
  6. Ask Jesus to come into your heart
  7. Receive Jesus as Lord and Savior
  8. Confess being a born-again Christ, and that you are going to Heaven.

Only the first two requirements are Biblical. Once Bill begins ADDING extra requirements to be saved at step three, he is preaching “ANOTHER GOSPEL.” Galatians 1:6-7, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.” At 12:51 time in the video, Bill tells the congregation to raise their hand if they want to be saved, “because He said if you confess me before men, I'll confess you before my Father in Heaven.” There is no Biblical requirement to confess Christ to be saved. The apostle Peter denied knowing Jesus and went as far as to curse the name of Jesus! In John 12:42b-43a, the Bible says, “among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him...” If confession were necessary to be saved, then these chief rulers couldn't have been saved, nor the apostle Peter. Bill Wiese is espousing a false plan of salvation!

Furthermore, at 13:18 time in the video, Bill Wiese says: “This is where you are going to make that commitment, it's going to change your whole eternity.” Folks, making a commitment is not part of the Gospel. Mr. Wise is adding a bunch of extra religious requirements that God does not require for salvation. The corrupt plan of salvation that Bill Wiese is teaching does not match the plan of salvation that Jesus taught. Therefore, the Gospel of Mr. Wiese cannot produce the new birth by the Holy Spirit of God. It is damnable heresy, a doctrine of devils!

So let's add this unbiblical item to make a commitment to Bill's list of requirements to be saved:

  1. Admit being a sinner
  2. Believe the Gospel of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection
  3. Repeat a prayer
  4. Ask forgiveness, say “I'm sorry,” and turn away from sin
  5. Desire to follow Jesus
  6. Ask Jesus to come into your heart
  7. Receive Jesus as Lord and Savior
  8. Confess being a born-again Christ, and that you are going to Heaven
  9. Make a commitment

Bill ADDS seven additional requirements to “THE SIMPLICITY THAT IS IN CHRIST” (2nd Corinthians 11:3b).

The Gospel of John is God's Gospel tract. In the Gospel of John we find the word “believe” mentioned 85 times, but none of the SEVEN extra requirements that Bill requires are mentioned. NONE!!!

Prayer for Salvation is Unbiblical

There is nothing taught in the Bible about repeating a prayer to be saved, and I am against using such religious methods to lead people to Christ. I was saved at age 13. I am against using sinner's prayers, because for seven miserable, tearful and painful years of my life (from age 13 to 20), I couldn't settle the assurance of my soul's salvation. The reason why is because everyone kept telling me that I had to PRAY A PRAYER to be saved. They all lied to me!!! I was confused because I kept focusing on the prayer itself. I became paranoid due to fear and uncertainty over whether I was saved or lost. Did I mean what I said? What if I missed something? Did I say everything right? What if, what if, what if? Had someone simply taught me THE TRUTH, that I could simply have BELIEVED without prayer a pray, that would have cleared up all my fears and concerns.

You Don't Have to Ask God For Forgiveness, He is Already Asking You to Believe!

Yes, it is true dear friend, you DON'T need to ask God to save you, because He is already freely offering you eternal life as a gift (Romans 5:15-18, 6:23). Jesus has already paid for everyone's sins. So all you need to do is accept God's free gift BY FAITH. Simply take God at His Word as recorded in the inspired Scriptures, BELIEVING that Jesus did it all for you. John 6:47, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

You see dear reader, when a false prophet ADDS extra requirements to the Gospel, it creates a whole new set of concerns, questions and problems. I am unalterably opposed to leading anyone to pray a prayer to receive the free gift of God. The Lord Himself simply taught us to BELIEVE. ...

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

John 6:47, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

John 11:25-26, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

23 Minutes In Hell

Realistically, if Bill had simply had a near-death experience, we could forgive him for simply being a misguided individual that unsuccessfully attempted to rationalize a powerful and confusing experience. Bill, however, did NOT have an NDE; in fact, he was perfectly healthy, and quite alive at the time of the alleged vision. He claims to have simply had an OBE, and that God simply pulled him out of his body. Seems legit.....

Unsurprisingly, since said vision supposedly happened at 3:00 in the morning, atheists and many Christians (or, really, anyone who's not totally taken in) alike came to the conclusion that it was probably a bad dream.[3] Bill offers no proof that it was anything other than that, other than saying 'ya just gotta believe me'! Hell, one of his witness 'testimonials' given in his book was a supposed former FBI agent who could 'just tell' Bill was telling the truth. Bill, of course, doesn't mention the guy's name or any other information about the agent, so conveniently no one can contact him to verify Bill's claim (or, more importantly, confirm if the agent in question even exists). ...

Don't you believe Bill Weise! I am astounded that so many people will blindly believe someone like Bill Weise, who make bizarre unsubstantiated claims; while completely ignoring the inspired Word of God, which is historically accurate and verifiable. What saith the Scripture? John 5:43, “I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.” As a general rule, never follow sinful men, follow the written holy Word of God. Beware of Bill Weise's counterfeit gospel.

“If all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, then why would you use those rags to prove that you're saved?” —a beautiful quote from Pastor Ralph “Yankee” Arnold, from the timeless MP3 sermon, “How Do I Know God Really Loves Me? - Part 2” | Part 1

Salvation is only by God's grace without works (Romans 4:4-5). If you ever go to Heaven, it will only be because you abandoned all self righteous efforts, ceasing from your own works, and resting completely in what Christ has already done for you through Calvary's cross to pay your debt of sin.
