Evangelist Paul Washer's Garbage Theology

By David J. Stewart | May 2015

Romans 10:13-14, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Perhaps you say, “You shouldn't call Paul Washer's religious teachings 'garbage.” Ok, then when you build your own website ministry, don't say it. I'm telling you... PAUL WASHER'S RELIGIOUS TEACHINGS ARE GARBAGE!!! You can watch the 8:43 minute YouTube video of Paul Washer spewing his Calvinistic junk here. Over 200,000 people have watched and have been influenced by this demonic video by Mr. Washer. It needs to be exposed, and I am right now!

Paul Washer has some very strange ideas about theology. In the preceding video, he teaches that God doesn't give people “a choice” to be saved. The reason why, according to Washer, is that everyone intensely hates God and would never come to Christ of their own free will. Therefore, as Calvinists (i.e., followers of the heretic John Calvin) believe, Washer says that God forces certain people of His own choosing to be saved. If God doesn't choose you, you go to Hell. This heresy is called “election.” Such wicked heresy goes totally contrary to the Word of God. Notice in our text verse from Romans 10:13 that the Bible invites anyone to be saved, saying, WHOSOEVER shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Whosoever means anybody, including me and you!!! If God chooses who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell, then the Bible would never offer such as invitation to “WHOSOEVER.”

Washer goes on to errantly teach in the video that unsaved people cannot come to God because of their spiritual blindness. Washer foolishly attempts to use the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead to prove his heresy. Washer says that Lazarus couldn't obey Christ's command to “come forth” until Lazarus was first resurrected in order to respond. Effectively, Washer is teaching that Jesus' words alone cannot raise the dead; but rather, the dead have to raise up first (become alive) before they can respond to Christ's commands. What garbage theology!

My friend, Lazarus had been cold dead for 4 days and his body stinketh. John 11:39, “Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.” May I kindly remind you that Jesus spoke to the wind and the water, and they obeyed Him!!! Matthew 8:27, “But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” If Jesus could speak the universe into existence by the power of His Words, do you not think that He could raise the dead? According to Paul Washer, a dead man cannot respond, so Lazarus had to raise up alive first, before he could obey the Lord's command to “come forth.” That is a lack of faith in the Lord and false teaching.

Washer likens this analogy to getting saved. In his false plan of salvation, Washer says that a man must first be born-again against his will, so that he can then obey God with his will. Here's what Paul Washer states:

“You have been raised on this: 'If you believe in Jesus you will be born-again'; All the early Baptist confessions say: 'ye must be born-again in order to believe in Jesus.' That's the difference!”

What utter heresy! There's nothing in the Holy Bible which says a person cannot believe on Jesus as their personal Savior until they've first been born-again. Effectively, Paul Washer is saying that you cannot be saved until you've first been born-again, which is ridiculous. That's like saying you can't enter into your home until you're already in your home. Paul Washer doesn't even make sense.

Notice what the Bible teaches in 1st Corinthians 1:21, “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” Notice that GOD SAVES THEM THAT BELIEVE!!! Amen! The Word of God doesn't say that God saves those who first get born-again as Paul Washer teaches. The Holy Bible says that GOD SAVES THEM THAT BELIEVE!!! You are saved (born-again) the very moment that you believe.

The Bible teaches in Hebrews 4:2 that Moses preached the Gospel in the Wilderness. Hebrews 4:2, “For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” The Jews wandered around for 40 years trying to find their way out of a desert Wilderness, but couldn't. Although Moses preached the Gospel (Good News) of the coming Messiah to them, they didn't believe it. Clearly they had a CHOICE!

Everything in the Bible teaches that we are saved by simply BELIEVING the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 10:43, “To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.” The Bible teaches that you are born-again the moment you receive Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. John 20:31, “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 6:28-29, “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Also, Jesus continually made an appeal for the Pharisees to repent and believe. Now, if God chooses who gets saved and who does not, then why would Jesus waste His effort and time trying to convert the self-righteous religious leaders? If God chooses who gets saved and who doesn't, then what's the use of going soul-winning? Why did God institute the The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20? If Washer is right, then why does Proverbs 11:30 say, “he that winneth souls is wise”? That means if you don't win souls as a Christian believer, you are a fool.

Notice Paul's method for winning souls to Christ... Acts 28:23, “And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.” First, you expound the Word of God to a person by teaching the Gospel. Second, you testify how you were saved. Third, then you persuade them to receive Christ as their own personal Savior. This is how Paul did it. Now if Paul Washer is correct that no one can choose to believe the Gospel of their own freewill, because all men are 100% evil haters of God, then why would the Apostle Paul waste his time persuading sinners to come to Christ in faith? Clearly, Washer is incorrect, and we all do have a God-given freewill to make our own choice concerning Christ. I chose to receive Christ as my personal Savior at age 13, believing the Gospel, and I hope you will too if you haven't already.

One Heresy Necessitates a Whole System of Heresies

Please understand that Calvinism is a classic example of buttoning a shirt the wrong way. That is, if you get the first button wrong, then all the buttons will be wrong.

This is why I often harp and preach against the Satanic counterfeit Bible versions in today's churches, because if you've got a corrupt Bible, then everything else is going to follow along in doctrinal error. The confusion caused by having several dozen different Bible versions to sift through in search of God's truth, consequently results in a spirit of mediocrity, indifference and discouragement in all things pertaining to the Christian life. My fire, drive and intensity as a preacher is fueled by knowing that I hold in my hand God's inerrant, infallible, perfect, preserved, incorruptible, inspired, holy, pure, Words of God, and I am referring only to the Authorized King James Bible!!!!!!!

The doctrinal system of Calvinism is commonly summarized in five principles:

  1. John Calvin was a religious heretic who taught that man is so totally depraved (called Total Depravity in Calvinism) that he cannot come to God.

  2. Well, then how can man come to God? Hence, a second heresy was begotten (Called Unconditional Election) which says that God chooses (or elects) who will be saved and who will stay lost.

  3. And then this created another dilemma, because why would Christ die for men whom God in His foreknowledge knew would go to Hell forever? So a third heresy was fabricated (called Limited Atonement in Calvinism), which says that Jesus only died on the cross for believers (the elect, or chosen).

  4. And so if God chooses people to be saved, then He must also force them to be saved (and this heresy is called Irresistible Grace in Calvinism). John Calvin taught that God elects a select few to be saved, and then He let Jesus Christ die only for that special elect group. And now by irresistible grace, God forces those that He elected to be saved. Do you see how one false doctrine begets another out of necessity?

  5. And finally, there is the fabricated doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints in Calvinism. Since Calvin taught that God chooses and forces certain people to be saved, and Christ only died for that group, then it wouldn't make sense that such elect would have a freewill to live any way they choose, and still be saved. So the heresy was created which says that a believer will persevere in holy living, otherwise they were never saved at all. This is where the popular heresy of Lordship Salvation mostly originates. In fact, Paul Washer, John MacArthur and other kingpins of the Lordship Salvation heresy are all devout Calvinists. From my own experience, I have discovered that many pastors who love, promote and distribute John MacArthur's books and materials haven't a clue about MacArthur's heresy on the blood of Christ (he says Jesus' blood is not on the mercy seat in Heaven), or his belief in predestination (i.e., God chooses and forces who will be saved), and so they ignorantly go along. MacArthur is a false prophet, unsaved, and needs to be exposed. No man who denies that Jesus' blood is on the mercy seat in Heaven is a born-again Christian!!! I hope you see how being wrong on one critical doctrine can alter everything else you believe. The great need in our churches today is to strengthen the basic fundamentals of the Word of God.

These 5 heresies are often summed up with the acronym “T-U-L-I-P.” To understand the dangers of Calvinism, please read, “Why I Disagree With All 5 Points Of Calvinism,” by Dr. Curtis Hutson. Thank you for reading this article. END
